Dun Cow

Name: The Dun Cow

Address: Main Street, Barton-under-Needwood

The Dun Cow was a beer house located on Main Street and only existed for a short period of time in the mid-1800's, run by the Hickson family, farmers from Wychnor, Sarah Hickson ran the beerhouse in 1851 and 1861 and then her son George took over for a short time before it closed.

It is difficult to determine exactly where it was located but on the 1861 census it was only four properties along from the Parsonage so it was certainly centrally located. Whether this is the Old Parsonage next to St James' or another clergyman's home further up Main Street towards the Knoll is not known.

1862 Slater's Royal National Commercial Directory

I can find no record of the Dun Cow on census records or directories after 1862. George Hickson is listed on the 1862 directory above but  on the 1868 Post Office Directory is just recorded as a Blacksmith.

1868 Post Office Directory

In 1871, whilst still living in Barton at Wood End/Main Street he is again listed as a Blacksmith.
