Bell Inn (Main Street)

Name: The Bell Inn

Address: 33, Main Street, Barton-under-Needwood



Located in the centre of the village the Middle Bell, or Bell Inn as it was originally known was one of the oldest Inns in the village. Pictured above one can see the top of St James' church in the background and probably the landlord and landlady stood posing at the front entrance.

Listed landlords at the Middle Bell were William Whiting (1818), Mary Whiting (1835), Henry Jones (1841-49), George Anthony Roobottom (1849-61), George Moore (1868-81), Richard Lubbock (1884-88), William Charles Ferneyhough (1891-92), William Hickson (1896), Henry Keaste (1900-01), Rowland Henry Hale (1904-26), Robert Grummett (1932), Herbert Lister (1936-40) and Alan & Hilda Sammons.

Celebrations spread far and wide following the birth of Queen Victoria and Albert's first son, Albert Edward, Prince of Wales who was later to become King Edward VII.



The early landlady of the Bell, Mary Whiting was still to be found living on Main Street in 1851 when in her 70's and is recorded as a "Retired Innkeeper"...

George Anthony Roobottom, landlord in the 1850's and 60's was originally from Yoxall, previously working as a miller and living at Yoxall Mill; at some time in the mid-1860's he returned to Yoxall where he ran the Crown Inn until his death in 1871.
